We can’t stress how much of a big deal good dental hygiene is, yet a third of Britons still don’t come to the hygienist.
Hygiene visits are your best defence against gum disease, as we will clean away harmful bacteria that are suffocating your gums and causing the onset of gum disease.
Quickfire Guide Dental Hygiene
- Treatment Type: preventive treatment to help you avoid gum disease (the main reason adults in the UK lose their teeth).
- Benefits: regular hygienist visits help you avoid
- Process: manual hand scaling instruments are used to gently chip away brown sticky plaque along your gum line + Airflow polishing to get rid of severe bacteria build up (optional).
Your hygienist will help you to:
- Achieve a healthy-looking mouth and the fresh breath that goes with this.
- Maintain professionally cleaned, debris-free teeth.
- Keep your gums pink and healthy so they don’t hurt or bleed while brushing or flossing.
- Avoid tooth decay, gingivitis, periodontitis, and all forms of gum disease.
- Help make sure your teeth can last a lifetime – with all the associated benefits of improved confidence, clear speech and comfort when eating.
- Eliminate the need for costly dental treatments.
Caring Hygienists Who Champion Your Efforts
Our team of caring, gentle hygienists are supportive individuals, who won’t ever judge you or criticise you for not having flossed or brushed enough.
When you visit for a hygienist appointment, we want you to go away feeling better about your oral health and smile than when you walked into the practice.
Aside from providing the vital treatment of getting rid of bacteria along your gum line and on your teeth, your hygienist is a great source of advice if you need help with flossing and brushing techniques or if you want to change your eating habits to avoid gum disease.

FAQs
Do I really need to see the hygienist if I regularly see the dentist?
As much as we wish it wasn’t so, it is necessary to see both your dentist and your hygienist because each individual performs different treatments that benefit your health.
Your hygienist is a custodian for your gum health – their main responsibility is to get rid of plaque, and this is something every single person on earth needs to have performed – everyone develops some degree of lingering plaque on their teeth.
Do I need a supplementary clean with the Airflow machine?
All of our dentists at Bancroft Dentistry opt for Airflow when having their own hygienist appointment to have plaque removed from their teeth – we swear by this cleaning method, as it removes almost 100% of plaque, which just isn’t possible using hand scaling equipment alone.
Airflow is:
- Super gentle.
- Uses compressed air, powder particles and water to remove plaque.
- Capable of getting rid of plaque stuck in between your teeth.
- Recommended if you have significant amounts of plaque on your teeth/if it’s been a while since you last saw the hygienist or are a smoker.
