We have all been told over the years that looking after your teeth and gums is important.
There is however, a lesser known, but growing link between the health of your teeth and gums with the rate of cognitive decline in old age. We all understand that keeping yourself mentally sharp in old age is important, maintaining a nimble brain through reading, exercise and puzzles is a crucial part of this. However, we can now add to these, looking after the health of your mouth.
Research published in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society makes a strong link between oral health and mental well being . Like with all research, they do state that more testing is needed, but keeping a healthy mouth is something we should all be doing everyday anyway. If we can get added benefit out of this, well its all to our benefit.
