Quickfire Guide to Dental Veneers
Most people will have some idea of what veneers are and what they can do to the overall shape, position and colour of your teeth (there are plenty of good and not-so-good examples on view daily on our TV screens after all!)
With the advent of new techniques and materials available, veneers can now look really natural and last for over 15 years with good care.
Dental veneers are thin layers of porcelain, placed over the front surface of a tooth with a strong dental adhesive. It’s possible to have one tooth treated with a veneer (in cases where only a single tooth has sustained discolouration or a crack). However, most people tend to opt for veneers to enhance multiple teeth, maximising the effects of treatment.
Long-lasting
Veneers can last for up to 15 years, whilst composite bonding has a lifespan of 4 to 9 years (approximately). The porcelain material used to make veneers is also really stain-resistant, so you won’t have to have them replaced due to staining as you might if opting for composite bonding (composite resin is much more prone to staining than porcelain).
Natural Results
The veneers of today look and feel natural. They won’t look like they’ve come straight out of Hollywood in the 70s, they’ll simply look like your own teeth with some subtle enhancements.
At Bancroft Dentistry, our clinicians and equipment are more than up to the task of meeting our discerning patients’ expectations. Our veneer cases are planned to ensure the results will look natural and befitting of your unique facial features – veneers can appear fake due to the fact that the treatment isn’t customised.
Dr Andy Bolam is our resident cosmetic dentist and focuses on customising treatment as much as possible (and he won’t mind us saying that he’s also a perfectionist when it comes to carrying out natural-looking results with veneers).
He frequently attends postgraduate courses throughout the UK to provide his patients with the most up-to-date treatments and techniques and is a member of the British Dental Association and the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.
Veneers cover up dental imperfections including:
They do rely on some tooth preparation (unlike composite bonding) but are more rigid and longer lasting because of this.
You can expect to attend 2 or 3 appointments to get your veneers.
This is one of our patients’ biggest concerns, and rightly so, especially as veneers have been linked to looking ‘false’ in recent years.
Our dentists will focus on giving you a natural-looking smile using veneers. The whole process is tailored to you, so we’ll look at your mouth and lip shape, dentation, bite, tooth shade and skin shade when we design your veneers.
The porcelain we use is carefully shaped and is well-known for capturing the characteristics of real tooth enamel.
Your own natural tooth structure sits underneath veneers, and it’s still possible for this to sustain cavities.
Veneers add a layer of protection as they’re fitted over the top, but you should still care for your teeth as normal to avoid decay.
